Bone Grafting
Rebuilding jawbone that has thinned after tooth loss, so there is enough left to hold an implant securely.
Adding grafting material to an area of jaw that has lost width or height, giving your body a scaffold to build its own bone into over several months.
The site is opened, graft material is packed in and covered with a membrane, and the gum is closed over it. Your own bone then gradually replaces the graft.
Jawbone shrinks once a tooth is gone, sometimes a great deal within the first year. Grafting makes an implant possible in a site that could not otherwise hold one.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about bone grafting.
Anyone who has been missing a tooth for a while and now wants an implant, or whose 3D scan shows too little bone width or height to place one safely.
Done under local anesthetic with sedation available. Comparable to having a tooth out, and most people are back to normal within a few days.
The procedure is under an hour. Healing before an implant can go in takes four to nine months, depending on how much bone had to be built.
Grafts do occasionally fail to take, more often in smokers. This adds both cost and months to an implant plan, so it should be priced as part of the whole sequence.
Swelling for several days, soft food for a week, and no smoking. Avoid pressing or poking the site, and do not rinse hard, as the graft needs to stay where it is.
